Michael excelled at sports and captained the UCC tennis team. He also taught tennis in the summer in Canada and the United States throughout his UCC Upper School years and continued to pursue his love of the sport as a member of the USTA Georgetown University Club tennis team in Washington, D.C. He’s remembered for his sportsmanship and knack for dramatic shots, crazy passes and incredible half and reflex volleys.
The UCC tennis team chose to wear Michael’s initials on their sleeves following his untimely death. To quote his UCC tennis coach, Derek Poon: “It was a terrific thing to do as many people asked us about the letters. It really helped to put sports participation into perspective for our boys and they realized that it’s more than simply playing a game that counts. For them, they realized that individuals are remembered and honoured for their ability as well as their character and, above all, how they treat others.”
The peers and alumnus of Michael’s graduating year decided to rename the Class of 2003 Fund in his name and memory, calling it The Michael E. Jurist (Class of 2003) Fund.
The fund was turned into a scholarship in 2013 to support a deserving young man who, like Michael, is involved in and takes advantage of all the College has to offer. The recipient shall possess strong academic and athletic skills (with a preference for tennis or basketball), have an interest in community service and internationalism, and be of outstanding character — as was the young man for whom this scholarship is named.
